QOTD: "The fact is that almost the entirety of what one reads in the paper or on the web is speculation. The writer isn't telling you what happened, he is offering an interpretation of what happened, or offering a projection of the future. The best scenario is that these theories are novel, compelling, informed, and based on reporting and research. But that is rarely the case. More often the interpretations of current events, and prophesies of future ones, are merely the products of groupthink or dogma or emotions or wish-casting, memos to friends written by 27-year-olds who, in the words of Ben Rhodes, "literally know nothing." There was a time when newspapers printed astrology columns. They no longer need to. The pseudoscience is on the front page.

Nor are the empty conjectures and worthless hypotheses limited to Donald Trump. Yes, pretty much the entire world, myself included, assumed he would lose to Hillary Clinton. Indeed, a not-insignificant segment of the political class, both Democrat and Republican, thought the Republicans would not only lose the presidency but also the House and Senate. Oops! I remember when, as the clock reached midnight on November 8 and it became clear Trump would be the forty-fifth president, a friend called. "Are we just wrong about everything?" he asked." --Matthew Continetti

NOT SO SPECIAL COUNSEL: Time for POTUS to fight fire with fire

By Karen McQuillan

John Eastman, law professor at Chapman University, writes in American Greatness this week that the powers invested in Special Counsel Mueller to investigate "Russian hacking/collusion/obstruction poses grave dangers to our body politic and our liberty."  His advice to President Trump: Fight fire with fire.  Turn the law and the courts back on your opponents.  Trump is being investigated without any probable cause of a crime.  The Obama administration, in contrast, is a target-rich arena of criminal activity.

HOLY CRAP: Debbie Wasserman Schultz Accuses Top Obama Official of Lying to Congress

By Amber Athey

Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz accused ex-DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson of lying under oath when he said the DNC refused the help of the DHS in their hacking scandal.

Johnson said during testimony in front of the House Intelligence Committee Wednesday that the Democratic National Committee refused DHS help with Russian hacking and opted not to turn over their hacked servers.

However, in a Thursday interview on CNN, Wasserman Schultz accused him of being “misinformed,” and said the DNC was never even made aware that their network had been compromised.

DEMOCRAT #RESISTANCE: Mobilizes Against... Nancy Pelosi

By Mike

I wanted to highlight one specific criticism Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY) made about her party’s leadership today, particularly in light of Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s self-righteous rant a few minutes ago.

For a party that constantly makes sanctimonious charges against Republicans for being stuck in the past, it sure doesn’t sound like the Democrats’ current leadership is open to change – or input from anyone under the age of 65 who hasn’t been in power for decades.

QOTD: "...the narrative with Bernie Sanders is he's for the people, he just wants everyone to get a fair break, he thinks the rich take advantage of the middle class and the poor and people should have free healthcare and free college and so forth and so on. Bernie Sanders is a radical Marxist who believes in violence, there I said it -- every radical Marxist believes in violence, every radical Marxist believes in violence. Can you think of one country where the radical Marxists have taken over the governments that isn't violent? Oh I know they preach humanity and compassion and equality and helping the poor, and the middle class, and all -- but can you show me one Communist country that is any of that, that is any of that. Show me one Communist country that is not in effect a police state. You going to show me China? It's a police state. you have no free access to the internet, there's no free speech and so forth and so on. You're going to show me Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea? What? The Complete List of Nicknames for Veep's Jonah Ryan

I recently met a Congressional staffer and we were discussing which TV series about Washington were most realistic.

He stated, without hesitation, HBO's Veep.

During the course of the series, Jonah Ryan -- tall, geeky, socially awkward, and (weirdly) also possessing delusions of grandeur -- makes the transition from low-level White House staffer to... Congressman.

The staffer I was schmoozing with said that Ryan's unlikely ascendancy, through a bizarre series of events, was entirely plausible. He said most Congressmen he knew were complete dunces and made Ryan look like Einstein.

PUT PRESSURE ON THE GOP NOW! Time to Pass a National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Law

By Mark Chesnut

In an educational op-ed posted Thursday at New York Daily News, criminologist and author John Lott makes the case that the previous day’s shooting at a GOP Congressional baseball practice proves why the country needs national Right-to-Carry reciprocity.

Lott, president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, said restrictive carry laws—like the one in Washington, D.C., forbidding nearly all law-abiding citizens from carrying firearms, even if they have permits from their home states—leave people helpless against attack.

SET DIRTBAG LEVEL TO MAXIMUM: Joy Reid and Scott Pelley Blame Steve Scalise For Getting Shot

By Daniel John Sobieski

Have you no shame, Joy Ann Reid? In an appalling example of the left’s pathological hatred of anything and anyone conservative, the MSNBC host said, not in so many words, that Rep. Steve Scalise kind of had it coming when a Bernie Sanders volunteer tried to assassinate him and his GOP colleagues as they practiced for thee annual baseball game between Democrats and Republicans in Congress. As Fox News reported her beneath contempt and all human decency remarked:

As Rep. Steve Scalise lay in his hospital bed recovering after he was shot by a maniac gunman who was hunting congressional Republicans, an MSNBC host asked whether the House Majority Whip’s life-threatening injuries meant Americans had to “ignore” his political positions.

QOTD: "Republicans have already preemptively sabotaged our messaging on Obamacare. Continuing in their group will just waste another month we could be working on regulations, immigration, and national security, and we won’t repeal Obamacare anyway, but instead just make it more popular.

It would be one thing if Republicans at least repealed the core regulations that make Obamacare insolvent. Then, even if they throw endless subsidies at Medicaid, private insurance, and high risk pools, at least there can be a free market, albeit a distorted one, for the remainder of the country or at least for the states that don’t want government-run health care. But it has become clear that on the regulatory structure, the Senate is making the House bill worse, not better. The time to evacuate is now.

It’s not too late for conservatives to propose their own repeal bill with free market supply side and insurance reforms. They can stand on their own messaging instead of dying for the other side’s ideology. If we are going to be stuck with a failing health care system, skyrocketing premiums, and states without a single insurer, at least let’s have the blame put on Obamacare, where it belongs, not phony repeal of Obamacare, so that we can have a small chance of coming back at another time and repealing it." --Daniel Horowitz

VERY FAKE NEWS: The Cover-up of Robert Mueller’s Rather Unseemly Track Record

By Cliff Kincaid

I am amazed by the conspiracy of silence, on the right and the left, about former FBI Director Robert Mueller’s bungling of the anthrax case. “In his years as FBI director and as a Justice Department official, Mueller gained a reputation for honesty, integrity, and being a ‘straight-shooter,’” writes Fred Barnes at The Weekly Standard.

This is pure hogwash, to use a family-friendly term.

QOTD: "Whether it’s an Islamic terror attack, a political assassination, or a crazy domestic shooter, the hallmark of all these attacks is mass casualties … when good people are not carrying weapons. This is why we see so many people killed in European terror attacks. Only the bad guys have weapons. In the case of the Alexandria shooting, however, Scalise’s security detail had guns and immediately returned fire to keep the attacker at bay, thereby mitigating what could have been a massacre. Nevertheless, had a member of leadership — the only members of Congress routinely afforded security details — not been on the baseball team, as many as 20 congressmen might now be dead. So many of these congressmen have concealed carry permits at home, yet they are unable to carry a weapon in the D.C. area, where they work so much of the time. This is fundamentally unfair and dangerous, and it needs to change.

The answer is not to grant special privileges to members of Congress, as some have suggested. The answer is to allow all Americans to carry guns across state lines the same way everyone can drive across state lines and have their driver’s licenses recognized by all 50 states. Such legislation is already on the table, with nearly 200 co-sponsors (including 3 Democrats), yet nearly a half a year into this Congress, Republicans have taken no action on it..." --Daniel Horowitz
